Women's Institutes

MAKOMAKO Tho Makomako Women's Institute spent a very pleasant afternoon last Thursday, when several members of tho Woodvillc W.I. paid a visit and supplied the programme for tho meeting. Mrs W. F. Day presided over a good attendance. Arrangements were made for the third birthday party, which is to be held on October 20. Mrs G. Hoggard and Mrs A. Vile were appointed delegates to the half-yearly council meeting, and Miss Sargent appointed to collect tho history of tho district for the Dominion Federation. The president introduced Mrs Hutchings, of Woodvillc, who gave a most interesting and instructive talk on gardening and spoke of the origin and cultivation of various flowers. An amusing playette entitled “Widows” was cleverly portrayed by Mcsdames Jaine .T. Sinclair and H. McNeil. Whistling solos by Mrs McNeil and humorous elocutionary items by Mrs Jaine, were very much enjoyed. Mrs AVylic proposed a vote of thanks to tho Woodvillc ladies for their lino programme, Mrs Nison suitably responding. The potatoes for tho Crawford shield Avere distributed, theso being kindly donated by Mr and Mrs Hughes. There wero good entries in the competition for the best pony, Miss D. Day being arvarded first place, with Mrs Day second. The competition for tho best Is worth for tho “bring-and-buy” stall brought forward a large and varied collection of articles, Mrs Hughes being awarded first prize. A dainty afternoon tea was dispensed by the hostesses, Mesdames A, Vile, E. Sowry and Miss Sowry. The singing of the National Anthem brought a very pleasant meeting to a close. .

AWAHUKI, Mrs. Rowlands presided at. the monthly meeting of the Awahuri Women's Institute on Wednesday afternoon. A motion of sympathy was passed to the relatives of the late Mr. Matthews. New members proposed were Mrs. F. Brock and Misses E. and D. Salt. Members decided to enter into the potato growing competition, and the seed Avas distributed by Mesdames Bond and H. Bennett, Avho were appointed to take charge of tho competition. Delegates elected to attend the half-yearly council meeting at Pafciatua Avero Mrs. Bond and Miss Mikklesen, and to the group meeting at Rongotca, Mrs. Litchfield and Miss Henson. It was arranged to hold an evening on October 27. Mrs. Conwell has kindly donated a cake and Miss Bennett ,a cushion for competition. Mention was made of the recent drama festival at Avhich Awahuri produced “A Ivnight of the Trojan War,” and tkoso members Avho ‘ took part Avero congratulated on thoir performance. The producer, Mrs. Bristow, of Palmerston North, was presented Avith a bouquet and gift in appreciation of her services. Miss Salt, who has recently returned from Rarotonga, gave an interesting talk on her impressions of the island and displayed some native curios. A. vote of thanks was accorded her. Mrs. Bristow kindly judged the competition for tho best boAvi or vase of spring flowers. The results Avero: Seniors, bowl, Miss Pearce 1, Mrs. Nicholson 2, Mrs. Litchfield 3; vase, Mrs. Giles 1, Mrs. Harriman 2, Mrs. Port 3. Juniors, bowl, Miss Rowlands I, Mrs. Terry 2, Miss Litchfield 3; vase, Miss Moore I, Miss Henderson 2. The hostesses Avere Mesdames T. and W. Manson, Nicholson, Terry and Miss Minogue. Mesdames Mair and Simpson Avere in charge of the market table. Thanks Avere expressed to Messrs Dahl, Wix, Woods, Ekstedt, Pcgden and Pearce, of Palmerston North, for tho loan of properties and assistance for the Drama Festival.
