From Our Own Correspondent Successful Social.

Despite many other attractions in the district and extremely unfavourable weather conditions prevailing, the Meeting House was comfortably filled on Tuesday evening last when the social and dance organised by Mrs. J. M. Durie in aid of local branch funds of the Women’s Division of the Farmers’ Union took place. The meeting house had been beautifully decorated for the occasion with paper streamers in shades of green and red, while punga ferns placed at intervals provided a further graceful touch. Many of the patrons travelled long distances to be present at this function which proved quite a success both financially and socially. The soloists contributing items were Mrs. N. Pearce and Messrs Shelton and N. Shortall, while Miss N. Amon, always a popular artist, gave several monologues in, her usual good style. The accompaniments were played by the Misses Vera Viles and M. Armour. At a suitable juncture in the proceedings Mi\ J. M. Durie, on behalf of Mrs. Durie, returned thanks to all those who had so untiringly assisted her towards the success of the evening, especially mentioning the ladies of the Division who had provided the supper and the artists who had given of their talent. In passing, Mr. Durie remarked on the generous manner in which the W.D.F.U. had aided distressed natives during the Napier earthquake, and in conclusion returned thanks to the members of the Division on behalf of his native people. Mrs. J. Williamson, president of the local branch of the W.D.F.U., moved a vote of thanks to Mr. and Mrs. Durie which was carried with musical honours. Messrs Durie Bros, orchestra gratuitously provided excellent music for the dancing, while Mr. J. Mars ton capably controlled the floor. Extras were played by Messrs Pat Kiwi and Dick. The popular Gay Gordons was danced for the first time here and caused much Interest, the lucky partners being Miss J. Duncan and Mr. King Wells, the Monte Carlo prizes going to Miss Pat McConnon and Mr. S. JElocken. About 1 o’clock this happy function was brought to a close.

Personal,

Miss Vonda McFarland, of Wanganui, hag been spending a holiday with Mrs. W. McConnon. The friends of Mr. Rubin Merritt will be glad to know that ho has made a good recovery from a slight operation and expects to return to his home In a few days. Mr. and Mrs. .T. M. Durie and their assistants are arranging a garden party in aid of the Maori Mission funds, which they hope to hold towards the end of October. This is sure to prove a popular function.
