Woodville

From Our Own Correspondent, Tennis Club.

There was an exceptionally large attendance at the annual meeting of the Woodville Tennis Club, the president, Mr. J, C. Bolton, being in the chair'. The president stated - that the past season had been a good one and although the club had not dono too well in the competition games, it was anticipated that this year the teams would be considerably strengthened. During the sfS-son two new coarts had been laid down, which had been much appreciated by the members. As a result the balance sheet showed a debit balance but it was hoped that the greater part of this would be wiped off during the coming season. The election of officers for the coming year resulted as follows:—Patron, Mr. W. H. Nelson; president, Mr. J. C. Bolton; club captain, Mr. F. D. Mackie; men’s secretary,' Mr. J. T. Horne; ladies’ secretary, Miss B. Grinlinton; general committee, Messrs R. Jones, G. W. Slane, W. Goodwin, H. Lagor, B. Ebbett, M. Bennett, Mesdames J. T. Horne, G. King, E. Nicholson, Misses B. Gothard, M. Redwood and M. Mules; delegate to Manawatu Centre, Mr. F. D. Mackie; match and handicap committee, Messrs F. D. Mackie, W. Goodwin and Mrs. Horne. It was decided to enter an A grade and a B grade 'team in the Centre’s Saturday competitions and a B grade team in the Wednesday competitions. The following new members were elected; Misses Surtherland and Toogood, and Messrs R. J. Schischka, L. Spelman, R. Whittington and G Fairley. Opening day was fixed for Saturday, September 30, when a Yankee tournament would be played. It was also decided to hold a ilannel dance on the evening of opening day when the trophies won during the past season would be presented. A. and P. Association.

The president, Mr. W. H. Gaisford, presided over a well attended meeting of the general committee of the Woodville A. and P. Association held on Monday evening. Mr. H. B. Stuckey, of Dannevirke, wrote witli reference to the resolution passed by the association protesting against the proposed wool levy. He stated that opposition is almost always caused by misunderstanding and in this case thought that the project was one that should have the whole-hearted support of every sheep farmer in the Dominion. Mr. Stuckey offered to address a meeting in Woodville on the levy proposals. After some discussion on the matter it was decided that the association was not disposed to call a meeting but suggested that Mr. Stuckey might convene one himself. The recommendations of the schedule revision committee were then carefully considered and the various alterations suggested were all approved. The mam addition to the schedule was for the putting on of wood chopping events, this being unanimously agreed to after a general discussion on the matter. The tug-of-war competition was left on the programme but the weight limit was 1 educed from 65 stone per team to 60 stone per team. Messrs G. H. Webber and A. Harris were elected new members.

Woodville Fire Board

The quarterly meeting of the Woodville Fire Board was held on Tuesday afternoon, there being present Messrs J. Elder (chairman), C. Forbes, A. H. Hustwick, J. W. Nome and W. G. Hay. The brigade superintendent’s ' report ft* the period was submitted as follows: —Sir. practices have been held and the attendance has been very good. Two fire calls had been received. The brigade’s annual bail was a great success. It has been brought to my notice that the water supply has on two different occasions been cut off all night in various streets In the borough. I would like you to advise me what position the brigade stands In in the event of fire occurring on such occasions. The chairman explained that the water had been turned off on two occasions in an endeavour to trace a leakage in the water system, but every precaution had been taken as regards turning the water on again in the case of an outbreak of fire. Horticultural Society.

At the annual meeting of the Woodville Horticultural and Industrial Society the president, Mr. A. H. Hustwick, presided over a fair attendance of members. The annual report, revealed a credit balance of £ls 7s lid! This must be considered very satisfactory. The summer show did not quite clear expenses. For the annual show the entries dropped from 950 to 841 but it was a great success. The winner of the Ryder medal was Mrs. Styles, of Pahiatua. Exhibitors from other districts were again numerous and the judges spoke very highly of the exhibits. A carnival dance was held, the society’s funds benefiting by £lB 7s, and thanks were due to all those who helped to make 'the dance such a success. Thanks were due to the donors of prizes, the judges, the Borough Council, the Jockey Club, the Press and all those members who so freely gave their valuable services to assist at show times.
