Umutoi
From Our Own Correspondent. The second term examinations were concluded last week and school closed on Friday for two weeks’ holiday. Mr. Crosby, one of the board’s inspectors, visited the school on Thursday, last and expressed himself as well pleased wmi the work in general. Arbor Day was held at the school on Thursday when a number of native trees and shrubs were planted in the grounds. Mr. Bert Sixtus, of Umutoi North, instructed the childrent in the correc method of planting the trees and gave an interesting address on New Zealand native bush. He was accorded three hearty cheers at the close of the afternoon. Miss J. Mackenzie arrived from Whakarewarewa on Monday to spend the school vacation with her parents at Norsewood road. Mr .and Mrs. E. Bastion and family are visiting Mrs. Bastion’s parents at Beaconsfield for the school holidays. Jessie, Pat and Margaret Pettigrew are spending a fortnight with their aunt, Mrs. A. Pettigrew, at Ridge road . Although tlie local tug-of-war teams which competed at Utuwai last week did not meet with success, they are not discouraged and are still In training. They will compete In the tug-of-war tournament to be held in Apiti on Thursday .
