Innovation in Axles
An interesting feature of this year’s Berlin Motor Show was the number of cars fitted with' independent springing. German manufacturers have been almost unanimous in discarding rigid axles for their 1933 models.
Instead of tying the wheels together in pairs on the conventional plan, they have adopted various methods for springing them individually, soi that the movement of one wheel does not affect its neighbour. To a lesser degree this trend was noticeable at the Paris Salon last October, three important French manufacturers hawing been converted to the use of springing of the individual type for their new models. Italy has, of course, always had an outstanding example of this principle in the Lancia. In Great Britain the B.S.A. and Alvis companies have produced cuts of the axleless type. Although no American ■manufaetturer has so far adopted independent springing, many are known to be carrying out extensive experiments on these lines.
