Woodville
From Our Own Correspondent. Borough Council Meeting, The monthly meeting of the Woodville Borough Council was held last Thursday evening, there being present the Mayor, (Mr J. Elder), and Councillors Maclde, Forbes, Shearman, Retter, Olsson and McGregor. Advice was received from the Internal Affairs Department to the effect that consideration was being given to the selection of the Government nominee for the Assessment Court under the Urban Farms Land Act, and that the setting up of the Court would be proceeded with as soon as possible. The Council fixed the fees and allowances at £4 4 - per day for each assessor. The Wairarapa Automobile Association wrote pointing out the danger from glaring headlights on cars and asking that the regulations in connection therewith be enforced—lt was decided to ask an officer of the Association to visit Woodville to test car lights. A complaint was received from the Woodville Co-operative Dairy Co. Ltd. regarding the amount of water going through the meter at the factory, stating that the amount charged for was greatly in excess of what had been used In other years and that they did not consider that the factory had used any more water this year than In other years—The matter was left in. the hands of the town Licences issued during the month were as follows: Drivers 50, heavy traffic (quarterly) B, dog registration 20,, public hall , hotel (annual) 4, hotel (quarterly) 1, building permits 3, shop 1, cart 1, under Health Act 1. The works and finance committee brought down a report recommending that application be made to the Local Government Loans Board for permission to convert the Manawatu Gorge Contribution Loan of £530, the Manawatu Gorge Contribution Loan of 1926 of £695 and the Gasworks Renewal Loan of £4244 In accordance with the Local Authorities Interest Reduction and Loans Conversion Act 1932-33—The recommendation was adopted with power to the Works and Finance Committee to act. Football. Charity Day in Woodville provided the patrons of football with a splendid afternoon’s sport and a good crowd of spectators turned out to view the games. The local club arranged a primary school midget seven-a-side tournament and this was played before the Junior match. Eight teams comprising Kumeroa, Woodlands Road, Papatawa and Woodville (5) took part, and the small boys treated the spectators with a good display. This event which the Club puts on annually was won last year by Woodlands Road and the same team again carried off the cup for this year’s games. Results were as follows: First round, Woodville Red beat Woodville Yellow 210. Woodville Green beat Kumeroa 5-3, Woodville White bea,t Papatawa 3-0, Woodlands Road heat Woodville Blue after extra time had been played 6-3. Final, the final was very evenly contested and up to a minute before time Woodville Green had a lead of three points. However, right on time Woodlands Road added another try which a budding- Nepia converted with a fine kick and winning the game by eight points to six. The junior grade match between Woodville and St. Patrick’s was played under perfect weather conditions with .
tho ground in excellent condition. From the kick oil the Woodville forwards carried play to the St. Pats twenty-five where St. Pats were penalised, but Peebles’ kick just went outside the posts. Shortly afterwards Burlace also missed with a penalty. St. Pats then took a turn at attacking-, carrying play to the Woodville line where Woodville forced. For the remainder of the spell the Woodville forwards battled in the St. Pats twenty-five and half time whistle sounded with no score. Upon resumption St. Pats started a passing rush which was just held up on the Woodville line. The Woodville forwards, however, worked play back to half way where a Woodville passing rush started, it also being held up at the corner flag. At this stage Woodville were trying their utmost, to penetrate the defence tent could not find an opening and St. Pats gained relief by two force downs. The latter stages of the gamp were played almost continually in the St. Pats twenty five but try as they might, Woodville could not score and the game ended shortly afterwards with a bloodless draw. Mr Rangi Almira gave .every satisfaction* as referee.
The Kla Toa and Woodville teams met on the school ground and a l'alrly even game resulted in a win for Woodville by nine points to three. Mr J, Fulton had charge of the game.
