Y.M.C.A. Swimming Carnival

SUCCESSFUL EVENING EVENT The twelfth annual carnival of the Y.M.C.A. Swimming Club was held in the Municipal baths last evening. Good lighting facilities and keen competition in all events combined to make the function a highly successful one. Despite the unfavourable weather conditions there was a good attendance of the public. In officially opening the carnival, Mr. J. Grant, chairman of the Y.M.C.A. Board of Directors, congratulated the club on once again putting on a successful meeting. Mr. Grant also mentioned the creditablo performance of H. Piorard, of Terrace End School, at the New Zealand swimming championships. held recently in Dunedin. The officials responsible for the efficient running off of the various events were: Referee, Mr. E. Persson; swimming; judges, Messrs A. D. Campbell, 0. o. oporle, G. 11. At a suitable juncture, a group of the well-known Y.M.C.A. entertainers provided much amusement by a novelty event in which they displayed a variety of new and unauthentie strokes. They repeated their efforts later with a display of "plain, fancy and trick diving” in which any deficiency of grace and poise was fully balanced by an amplitude of the grotesque and
