Stedman Beats Malfroy
AUCKLANDER’S BRILLIANT RETURN TO FORM Per Press Association AUCKLAND, Last Night. Tho semi-final matches of the Auckland Lawn Tennis Association’s annual 'championships were played on Saturday in very hot weather. A. C. Stedman (Auckland) created a surprise by defeating Malfroy in the semi-final of tho mon’s singles. Malfroy had beaten his opponent three times previously this season at Wanganui, New Plymouth and in the Wilding Shield at Wellington. Stedman had shown only modcrato form on the preceding days, but rose to tho occasion magnificently with powerful and accurate driving. The results of the semi-finals are:—
Men’s Singles: Stedman beat Maifroy 5—7, 10—8, 6—2 6—3; Bartleet beat Sturt 2—6, 6—l, 6 —o, 6—3. Ladies’ Singles: Miss Macfarlane beat Miss Beverley 6 —2, 6—4; Miss Knight beat Mrs. Melody (Wellington) 6—3, 7—5. : Men’s Doubles: Bartleet and Malfrov boat Lucas and Milne 6—2, 7—5, 6 —4; Stedman and Sturt beat Charters and Morrison 2—6, 6—4, C —l, 6—3. In the doubles final Hall and Marcel Rainvillc, of Montreal, defeated Shields and Edward Burns, of New York, 6 —2, 1— 6—3,.4—6, 6—4. In the Canadian indoor tenuis Anal I'. X. Shields defeated J. Gilbert I-lall, 6—2, 6—4, 6—2. McGrath Beats Vines AND IS BEATEN BY GLEDHILL MELBOURNE, Jan. 2.. At the Australian tennis championships in the quarter-finals of the men’s singles, McGrath defeated Vines, o—2,0 —2, 2 B—6, 7—5. Vines netted more than usual, but McGrath returned his lightning-like services perfectly. McGrath’s backhand was the deciding factor. In the semi-final Crawford defeated Allison, 6—2, 3 —6, 6 —o, 6 —3. In the tennis championship tourney in the men’s singles semi-final, Gledhill (U.S.A. beat McGrath, 6—4, 6—l, 6—l. In the doubles semi-finals, Crawford and Moon beat Allison and Van Ryn, 10 —8, 6 —3, 6—4 ; and Gledhill and Vines beat Cummins and Bassett, 6 —2, o—3, 7—5. In the -women’s singles semi-fina», Miss Hartigan beat Miss Hoddie Wrigley, 4 —6, G —o, 6—4. In the women’s doubles semi-final, Mesdamcs Molesworth and Westacott beat Misses Woodwar and Derham, 6—o, 6 —2 ; Mrs. Van Ryn and Miss Hartigan beat Mesdames Buttsworth and Crawford, 6—B, 6 —4, 6—2. In the mixed doubles semi-final, Crawford and Miss Crawford beat Franltenberg and Mrs. Bond, 6—3, 6—3.
