Maori Honesty
(To tho Editor.)
Bir, —It may have been a coincidence that I happened to bo reading an account of the travels of Captain Cook in tho Pacific when J.H.B. made reference in his Momot'ics yesterday to the honesty of the Maori. I wonder if J.H.B. is familiar with what is recorded of Maori integrity as Captain Cook and his associates discovered it ? They found tho natives whom they refer to as Indians, far from honest and this fact is referred to on several occasions Thefts from tho ship and in the pro cess of bartering were numerous and when accused of them, wore denied by tho Maoris with a display of innocence that is recorded by the chronicle. On being found out the Maoris would simply laugh tho matter off. This thieving led to quarrels between the Maoris and whites that caused Captain Cook concern. Ho even went as far ns to publicly administer lashes to one of In’s sailors who had stolen from the Maoris in order to impress upon the natives the Englishman ’s abhorrence of dishonesty. I am etc., — “STUDENT.”
