First Count Mums h Irish Elections COSGKAVE RETURNED FOR CORK United Press Association—-By Elcctris Telegraph—Copyright LONDON, Jan. 25. The. count in the Free State elections has begim, but owing to the intricacies, due to proportional representation, the final figures will not be available until late on Friday or Saturday. The poll averages 80 per cent, compared with 75 last year. The few first preferences will be decisive in some contests, others needing a dozen successivo counts. Impersonations were widespread, but the rowdyism was nothing unusual. The military were occasionally called to assist the police. The Army Comrades Association used tyre levers and spanners against their armed opponents. At Ballyduff a youth was shot in the leg. Soldiers threatened to use tear gas and quelled a disturbance in Monaghan.
The unopposed candidates are Professors Thrist and Alton and Sir Jamos Craig, Independents, Dublin University, and the Speaker, Mr. F. Fahy. The Fianna Fail members elected include Mr. Maguire and Mrs. Concannon, the woman novelist. Mr. McGilborgan (a Cosgraveite) was elected for the National University. A severe blow was the defeat of the Cosgraveite, the cx-Speaker, Mr. Hayes. The do Valeraites are expected at least to retain tho Dublin seats. Those elected for Wicklow include Mr. Moore, a do Valeraitc, and Mr. L. Mahoney, a Cosgraveite, and for Wexford Mr. Cornish, Labour. Dublin North elected O’Kelly (Fiannaite) 17,053 with Lord Mayor Byrne (Independent) 14,447 and Muloahy (Cosgraveite) 8864. Lord Byrne hitherto always headed the poll. Cosgrave Elected, Mr. Cosgrave has been elected for Cork. Mr. Cosgrave polled 4000 fewer rotes than at the last election. INCREASED MAJORITY T&S. DE VALERA Received Thursday, 7.10 p.m. LONDON, Jan. 26. De Valera headed the Clare poll with an increased majority of 6000. Lemass is elected for Dublin City South. CLEAR MAJORITY Received Thursday, 7.10 p.m. LONDON, Jan. 26. The News-Chronicle’s Dublin correspondent says tho unofficial returns first preference votes indicate a clear overall majority for de Valera. As a sample of election-eve propaganda de Valera’s organ, the Irish Press, published a page of world wide good wishes including a thrcc-column facsimile of the Wellington Irish Republican Association’s cable: "The Irish race in New Zealand wish you a sweeping victory.”
