Women’s Institutes

OROUA DOWNS T.ho monthly meeting of the Oroua Downs Women’s Institute was held in the hall on Tuesday, January 17, Mrs. W. Scott presiding over a fair attendance. Following the singing of the “Odo to Friendship,” Mrs. Scott took the opportunity to wish all the members a very happy and prosperous New Year. Visitors welcomed by the president were Mesdames Wood (Palmerston North), Senior (Auckland), Ncilson (Danncvirke), and Jamieson. Mrs. L. Burling was enrolled as a new member. Final arrangements were mado for the institute picnic which is to be held on the Oroua Downs Sportsground on Friday, January 27, and also for the first birthday party to be held on February 21. Mrs. Hobbs very kindly gave a demonstration on fretwork. The monthly competition for the best posy was won by Mrs. B. Oliver, with Mrs. D. Courdly second. A very interesting competition arranged by the hostesses was won' by Mrs. Hobbs. A dainty afternoon tea was served by the hostesses, Mesdames Thompson, Proctor, T. Conlan, F. Raikcs and Misses A. Grammar and M. Christensen. A very happy afternoon was brought to a close with thei singing of the National Anthonie makomako. Makomako Women’s Institute held the annual garden party in the Makomako school grounds on Anniversary Day. Tho weather was beautifully line and visitors wero present from neighbouring institutes. The programme opened in tho morning and tho competitions held and won throughout tho day were as follows :—Clock golf, Miss P. Ness and Mr. W.Eising; beans in a bottle, Mr. R. Dagg (the total being 557) ; naildriving, Mrs. Dagg and Mr. G. G. Day; chair stepping, Miss Sargent and Mr. R. Sonntag; tennis serving, Miss Lowry and Mr. W. Eckert. Tho tug-of-war was keenly contested, there being six teams of t entered. Tho winning team of ladies proved to be Misses N. Beech, J. McCullough, hi. Sonntag and Day, while Messrs. N. Rowse, D. McCullough, F. Towner and G. Harris won out in tlio men’s section. There was a pretty display in tho competition for the best collection of flow* erg, which was won by Miss E. Rowso. After a dainty afternoon tea had been dispensed by the. institute members, the 'president, Mrs. Eising, presented the prizes for tho various competitions. Tho committee desires to thank all those who assisted in anyway to make the function a success, especially the competition stewards, stall holders and the donors of prizes. Dance in the Evening. The celebrations were continued in the evening when a very jolly dance was held in the public hall. Although the attendance was not very large, those present kept the dancing going with a merry swing, novelty dances adding to the fun, while the ice creams and soft drinks stall did. good business. Spirited dance music was supplied by Misses I. Lowry, D. Day and Messrs. G. Hoggard, H. Hugos, R. Day (piano), H. Garlick (violin), and S. Holdaway (saxophone). The duties of M.C. wero capably carried out by Mr. S. Davis. POHAN'OHNA The January meeting was held in tho Domain in beautiful sunshine. Apologies were received, from some • absent members but a jolly time was spent by

those present. Mrs. Drummond, yho received warm thanks, demonstrated pine needle work, membors working at traps, etc., during demonstration. A pleasant time was spent in community singing, and birthday greetings wero extended to the popular secretary and several members. A vote of sympathy to Miss Grant, our V. 0., in the loss of her sister, was passed in the usual manner, also a vote of sympathy with Mrs. Croft, in her illnoss. A competition for the six largest gooseberries was won by Mrs. Galvin, with Miss Sinclair second and Mrs. Sinclair third, and in a nail driving competition Mrs. A. Balmor proved the winner. Felicitations wore extended to Miss Carr, whose marriage takes place this month. It is planned to hold the February meeting also in the Domain when Mrs. Essex, Palmerston North, will lecture on home nursing. The competition will be something new from something old and the roll call, Biddles. Failure to ask or answer will cause the offender to be fined. A vote of thanks passed to the hostesses brought a happy meeting to a close.
