WINNER IN NORTH ISLAND TENNIS CHAMPIONSHIPS Times Special. MASTERTON, Last Night. A feature of to-day’s play in the North Island tennis championships was tho splendid light of Robortson (Palmerston North) against Malfroy in the championship singles. Malfroy took the first set fairly comfortably by 6 —3, after which Robertson got going and had Malfroy running all over tho court to lead s—l.5 —1. Malfroy then used the net to better advantage, and after a great struggle made the scores 5-all. The game then went to 10-all, Robertson frequently aceing his service to win set point with a scorching backhand drivo which left Malfroy standing, winning 10—12. Mhlfroy led 4—l in the third, but Robertson again outplayed him to make the scores 4-all. The effort had been a little too much for Robertson, however, who dropped his service to givo Malfroy a hard-fought victory, tho scores being G—3, 10—12, 6—4. Other Results Per' Press Association MASTERTON, Last Night. The North Island tennis championships wero continued to-day. In the boys’ championship singles final J. W. Gunn (Auckland) defeated I. Bowden (Masterton), 6—o, 6—o. Other results were: —
Ladies’ Championship Singles.—Quar-ter-finals: Miss Howell beat Miss Hnggitt, 6—2, 4—6, 6—2; Miss M- Rutherford (Manawatu) beat Miss Macassoy, 56, 3 —6, 6—3; Miss Bell beat Miss Glenny, 6—3, 's—7, 6 —4. Semi-final: Miss Whyte beat Miss P. Riddiford, 6 6—l.
Ladies’- Championship Doubles.— Quarter-finals: Misses L. and M. Rutherford beat Misses Beetham and V. Rutherford, 6 —3, 6—l; Misses Todd and Whyto beat Misses Swainson and Swainson, 6 —3, 6 —l; Misses Macassey and Gould beat Misses Glenny and Howell, 6—4, 6—2. Semi-final: Misses W!iytc and Todd beat Misf’cs L. and M. Rutherford, 6 —4, 2—6, 6—4. J. W. Gunn won the final of tho B grade men’s handicap singles, and Payton and Rishworth (Masterton) won tho final of the B grade men’s handicap doubles. The tourney will conclude to-mor-row. E. D. Andrews Will Play Americans j RETURN TO ENGLAND DELAYED Times Special. WELLINGTON, Last Night. The secretary of the New Zealand Lawn Tennis Association, Mr. D. Murray Kean, stated to-day that the management committee had approached E. D. Andrews, tho New Zealand singles champion, and that Mr. Andrews had agreed to rearrange his plans so that ho might appear in Wellington against tho American tennis team on February 8. Further, Mr. Andrews had stated that he would endeavour so to change his plans that he would bo able to play against tho Americans in Auckland on February 11. Mr. Andrews had originally intended to leave for England this week. Tho other members of the New Zealand team will be announced later.
