Auckland Bakers Will Strike
If New Wage Terms Are
Enforced

AUCKLAND, Last Night.
Following opposition by tho employees to the now wages and conditions enforced by the employers in the bakery trado after tho failure of conciliation proceedings the largest meeting of the Auckland Bakers’ Union held in the last 20 years decided last night to coaso work next Friday if tho master bakers did not accept the alternative proposals which the union is making and which will be submitted to the master bakers to-morrow. The employers’ conditions provide for wages of £4 4s per week to journeymen bakers for a 4 a.m. start with an additional 6d an hour for each hour worked before that with a maximum of 2s per shift. They also intend to reintroduce tho 10-hour day, to eliminate tho annual holiday of eight days, to reduce the minimum age of junior labourers from 18 to 16 with a reduction of the old wage of £1 18s 3d weekly to £l. Tho union decided not to accept these terms, but to offer tho 4 o’clock start with wages for journeymen baker £4 10s. They also agreed to work a night shift, starting not earlier than midnight for 10s per week extra in all cases, the annual holiday to be six days. They aro alos prepared to forego the picnic day. Tho union asked for the minimum age for juniors to be 18 at £1 17s 6u weekly.
