At the Dunolly school householders’ meeting on Monday night the following were elected as the committee for tho ensuing year: Messrs D. IV. Smith (chairman), L. Nitschke, John Old, D. Marshall and John G. MacMillan.
ASHHURST. The' annual meeting of householders was held in the school on Monday evening, Mr. W. N. Brewer Doing elected to the chair. The annual report, whicu was adopted along with the balance sheet, read as follows:—“The work of the committee for the past year has been, mainly, the general care of the buildings and grounds. It was very evident early in tho year that tne financial position was going to be difficult, and the committee has used every endeavour to keep down expenditure, ihe loss of subsidies usually paid by the board made a serious differenco in our receipts for the year and compelled us to leave new work until better times. Even with the maintenance . work, which is neceSs'ary at all times, a'considerable amount, has been spent, and this is reflected in our balance sheet. Various working bees were organised during the year, and work such as rclevelling the lawns, re-erecting fences, etc., carried out. Tho thanks of the committee aro due to tho members of the local football club, who on disbanding, devoted £5 of their funds to the seliooi library. The fancy dress ball was held in August and proved a success. Thanks aro extended to those willing helpers who helped to make the ball the successful function it proved. The annual picnic was hold in the Domain, being attended by a large number of children and parents. With regard to tile dental clinic, tho committee have been informed, unofficially, that w r o shall be included with the town schools. Although this is entirely unofficial, we axe confident that after many years of persistent effort, we have almost attained our objective. In common with other committees, we have entered a vigorous protest against Ihe proposed cuts in capitation and other grants made by the Department. The Economy Commission has proposed several rather severe cuts, which, if parsed into law, will have a far-reaching effect on country schools. The proposals have been discussed by tlic combined committees and emphatic protests against their adoption have been sent to the Parliamentary representatives of the district. The average roll for the year was 144.3 and the average attendance 134.7. The result of the proficiency examinations was very satisfactory.” The election of committeemen for the J ensuing year resulted in tho following being appointed: Messrs W. N. Brewer, < H. Bristow, R. D. Davis, (). Kerrigan, < J. H. ,Sumner, M. P. Wilkin, H. J. i Woodroofc. At a subsequent meeting , of the new committee Mr. Brewer was rc-eleeted chairman, and Mr. Sumner re-elected secretary. On the motion of Mr. G. R. Taylor, a hearty vote of thanks to the outgoing committee was carried by acclamation.
