College Street School’s First Swimming Sports

HIGH STANDARD IN ALL EVENTS Favoured with such splendid weather tho College street school pupils’ lirst annual swimming sports, held at tho municipal baths yesterday afternoon, could not be anything else but a highly' successful fixture. Real summery conditions prevailed and, with the swimming up to the usual high Palmerston North standard, the carnival provided all that could be desired. The conduct of the events was in charge of the teaching staff. Tlic heats had been decided previously, and finals were the order of the day. The boys’ and girls’ senior championships were won by Rex Furness and Leila Edwards respectively, while the junior honours were awarded to Jack Mason and Essie Henderson. LIFE SAVING COMPETITION FOR WESTON SMITH TROPHY. Y.M.C.A. WINNERS OUT OF EIGHT ENTRANTS. Perfect weather conditions prevailed last evening for the life saving competitions conducted at tho Municipal baths for tho Weston J. Smith rose bowl. The tests consisted of resuscitation, promotion of warmth and four methods of rescue; points being awarded lor time and ability. Eight teams participated, tho winners proving to be Y.M.C.A., with Terrace End school (girls) second and Terrace End school (boys) ttiird. This was the fifth competition xor i».t trophy presented in 1927 by Mr. W. J. Smith, of Palmerston North, to the Manawatu head centre of the Royal Life Saving Society, Y.M.C.A. having held the honours for aHe first two years and tho Boys’ High School representatives for tho succeeding contests. The officials controlling last night’s fixture wore Messrs D. C. Pryor, W. Schwarz, W. Eyre (judges), W. J. Smith, R. Small ana F. T. Vasey (timekeepers). .
