Warfare in Manchuria, chiefly directed against the Japaneso Government of Henry Pu Yi, appeared to-night to bo spreading along tho north and western frontiers adjoining Soviet Russia. General Ma Chan Shan, the Chinese militarist who defended Tsitsihar from tho Japanese and later joined tho invading forces in setting up the new independent Government, was understood to bo prepared to lead an expedition against the “rebel" or anti-Japanese forces in the districts of Manchouli and Heilio. Both Manchouli, on the western frontier, and Heiho, on the northern, are near the Russian frontier, which is heavily guarded by the reinforced Soviet special Far Eastern Army. Recent indications that Japanese troops were planning to advance near the frontier brought vigorous protests from Moscow.
