Prices Above Expectations

FOR GOOD QUALITY BREEDING . EWES. FEILDING FAIR OFFERING. MEETS WITH SPIRITED BIDDING. Prices for breeding ewes registered a sharp rise at the annual ewe fair at Feilding yesterday when close upon 22,000 were offered to a particularly large attendance of operators, fully representative of the North Island. It is not easy to find justification for this unexpected. buoyancy in tho breeding ewes market, unless it is accounted for by tho rather heavy killings this season ot owe mutton, which may havo resulted in a shortage. If such is the case, then tho neglect to operate at last week’s salo when good lines made up to 5s fid, is not understandable. Tho fact that many farmers are going in for fat Jamb raising may influence the demand for good breeding ewes, but this does not justify the jump in prices which was recorded yesterday. The best price of tho 5-year ewes offered yesterday made up to 10s 3d as against 7s fid on Friday of last week, while the best price yesterday for 4 and 5-year ewes was 10s, against 5s 3d last week. Considering the state of the Home markets for lamb, mutton and wool, vendors obtained most satisfactory prices for their sheep—in most cases those prices being very much in excess of export rates for fat ewes.

Ia the case of tlio younger shcop ; prices were in sympathy with market values for lamb and wool, reckoning the usefulness of 2-ths. on the basis of four seasons ’ service. Compared with the best price obtained for 2-ths., namely 17s, older sheep were dear. The interest in the offering of 2-ths. was well maintained throughout the sale and practically the total yarding was sold under the hammer. The best prices realised for the several classes were:— 5-ycar ewes, 10s 3d obtained by E. M. Meyrick; 4 and 5-year 10s, obtained by AI. A. Conway; 4-year 13s Bd, obtained by L. Meads; m.a. 12s 6d, obtained by H. K. Stewart; 4-th. 14s, obtained by N. J. Short; 2-th. 17s, obtained by Est. of late E. Short.
