Walker's (Auckland) Rink-Champions
CLOSE FINISH Per Press Association. CHRISTCHURCH, Jan. 22. Playing well below form, Walker's Auckland Club rink, which up till then had had no loss, was decisively defeated by Deare (Dunedin Club) in one Of the semi-finals of tho Dominion rinks championship to-day. Had Walker won the game the championship would have gone to him, as Dearc had had one loss. As it is, another game will be played between these two rinks this afternoon and will constitute the final. Walker’s rink looked anything but champions on the form this morning. Tho skip’s running shots were comparatively poor, and his inaccurate drawing was in sharp contrast with his previous form. The failure of the Auckland rink was due just as much to the severe falling off in dc Launay's play. The Auckland third played like a secondrater.
Deare's rink, which had a line lead in Gregory, played its usual consistent and accurate game. The first sharp turn of the scoring in Deare’* favour was on tho third or fourth head., Walker urns lying four, but Deare, with his last shot, drew alongside tho kitty perfectly, took the four from Walker and made a difference of five in the scores. The gap between tho scores was widened to 21 —7 in Deare's favour at tho 16th. head. The game ended on the 19th. head with Dearo 16 up, 24 8.
