How They Ran

Arrowhead Just Beats War Ace

The Swell, Okapua, Swiftray and Doe were withdrawn from the Hurdles, and in a field of six solid support was accorded Arrowhead, Whisoguo and Aloerangi. When tho tapes went up Aloerangi led out from IVhisogne, Tameterangi and Arrowhead. The last-named jumped badly at the first fence and Golden Area moved up, Aloerangi, IVliisogne and Golden Area being in line through the straight, with Arrowhead and Tametcrangi following. IVhisogne showed the way into tho back from Aloerangi and Arrowhead, and running to the half mile War Aco closed on them. IVhisogne was first into the straight, just clear of Arrowhead and War Ace, which ran out at the turn, losing sufficient ground to make all the difference to Ms chances of getting first money. The finish was a good one. IVhisogne finished gamely, but Arrowhead hit the front half way down the running, though he had to bo ridden out to beat tho fast-finishing War Ace by a head. IVhisogne was a neck .further back and Aloerangi was a poor fourth, followed by Tamcterangi. Arrowhead thoroughly deserved tho win, but. the backers of War Aco were unlucky.

Easy for Cuticle

Acora (£251) and Arikinui (£180) were sorted out by the public for the Pohangtnn, Handicap, but the Hastingstrained Cuticle led them home to pay a fair price. Arikinui and Acora were quickest to begin and showed the way out. from Portray and Cuticle. After they had gone about two furlongs Portray joined Arikinui and Acora in the van, and those three wero together crossing the top, France keeping Cuticle in behind them, while Freehold and Chopin were next. Arikinui held a slight advantage over Acora and Portray as they turned for home. Once in line for the judge, however, Acora drew alongside the leader, and the pair were lighting it out when France, on the outside, shook Cuticle up. She was on terms at the distance and went, on to win comfortably by a good two lengths from Acora, which hung on well to beat Arikinui by half a length. Freehold was fourth and Portray fifth. Easy for Hauibowline

Arvada (£216), Tho Budget (£170) and Hauibowline (£138) were sorted out as the likely ones in the Siberia Hack and they filed the places, Hauibowline, however, being the one to saluto the judge. Arvada, Longford and Golden Shadow were first away from an indifferent start, Hauibowline and False Scent being next, to begin. Before the field had gone a furlong, Hauibowline took up the running from Longford and Arvada. At the first turn Longford swung out, taking Derry Beilo and Golden Shadow, while Arvada dropped back. Crossing tho top Haulbowlino opened up a break on the others, and tho Awapuni horse was first into the straight from Tho Budget, Sanguine King, Arvada and Golden Shadow. Hauibowline was never threatcncd in the run to tho judge, and lie won nicely by a couple of lengths from tho favourite, which got up in time to beat The Budget by a head. Sanguine King was fourth, and then came Derry Belle, Golden Shadow and Navaho.

After the race the judicial committee held an inquiry into the interference caused by Longford, but after evidence had been heard it was decided to take no action.

Cup to Grand Jury

After attending the leaders to the straight, tho favourite, Grand Jury, came with a nicely-timed run to win tho Cup) from Arajcan by a, good length, Billion being in third place, a Jong neck away from Arajcan, while Arikira, was fourth. In a good pool there, was plenty of support for Grand Jury, Shrewd, The Swell, Arajcan and Arikira. There was no delay at the post and Arrowhead led through the straight from Rory Mor, Arajean and Grand Jury. Rory Mor dropped back a bit going round the turn, and Arrowhead showed the way

along the back from Arajean, Grand Jury, Arikira, Rory Alor and Billion. Thero was little alteration over the next bit, and tho loaders wore unchanged into the straight. In tho run to the post Arajean was first to show out, but Grand Jury joined issue about, tho distance and went on to win well by a good length, Arajean being the best part of half a length in front of Billion, which made up a lot of ground over the last bit, Arikira was fourth, followed by Shrewd, Arrowhead, Rory Alor and The Swell. Pine Makes it Three on End

There wore only five starters in the Novice Stakes, and tho public were prepared to accept a very short price about Air.' George New's filly, Hastrugi, which was entrusted with nearly twice the amount, invested on Master Arausio’s chances. The favourite was first out from a good start and was never headed. Alastcr Arausio, Lackston and Park Acre followed her out from tho barrier, but Gasform was in second place going across the top. Sastrugi .showed the way into the straight, just ahead of Gasform, Alastcr Arausio being a couple of lengths back. Gasform did not go on with it, but Muster Arausio came with a, late run to get within a length of the winner at the post. Gasform was four lengths back and Park Acre was fourth. Patearoa All the Way

Rapallo, Tliornproof and In Vain were withdrawn from tho Gorge Handicap. Green Patch (£282) was installed favourite, with Chief Savago (£233) and Patearoa' (£199) next, in demand. Patearoa, on tho outside of tho field, began well and led out. of the straight from Gran Chaco, Chief Savago, Pallow, High Heather and Green Patch. There was no alteration in the order for the next half mile, and running to the far turn War Ace went up round the field, Patearoa led across tho top and into tho straight well clear of Gran Chaco and Chief Savage, with Green Patch and War Aco together next. Once in line, Patearoa went on to win easily by two and a half lengths from Chief Savage, which was threo and a half lengths ahead of Gran Chaco. Green Patch was fourth, followed in by War Ace, High Heather and Fallow. Hystride Wins Well Arvada, Navaho, Haulbowline, In Vain, Lady Court, Kalmuk and Alastcr Arausio were the scratching.? in the Komako Hack Handicap, reducing tho field to seven. Souchcong, the top-weight, was favourite, but. Hystrido was carrying almost as much money. When the barrier went up Sanguine King led out from Hystride, which was followed by Souchong, Derry Belle. Abbey' Queen, Golden Shadow and Priscilla Verne in that, order. Sanguine King and Hystrido showed the way across the top and into the straight, Derry Belle and Souchong being next. Tho finish was a good one. At the distance Souchong and Derry Belie swung out and issued a challenge to the leaders. Souchong could make no impression, but Derry Belle finished full of running. Hystride got the verdict by a neck from Sanguine King, Derry Belle failing to reach the second horse by a short head. Souchong was fourth and was foLlowed in by Abbey Queen and Golden Shadow. The favourite did not, got too good a run, but had no chance with tho winner. Acora Beats Freehold As a result of her win earlier in the clay Cuticle was asked to carry S.ll in tho Raumai Handicap. Cuticle (£2OS) was favourite, with Acora (£223) and Arikinui (£186) next, in demand. When the field had settled down Acora was in front, closely attended by Freehold, with Cuticle next, while Briar Root was last. Statuary moved up into third place at the half mile and Acora showed tho way across tho top and into tho straight from Freehold, Statuary, Briar Root and Arikinui. In the run to the judge nothing had a. chance with Accra, which won well by a length from Freehold. Statuary was a length and a half back, third, and Briar Root was fourth. The favourite was last.
