CLUNY WINS PRESIDENT’S HANDICAP STEWARDS’ TO SOUCHONG Per Press Association. HASTINGS, Last Night. For the first day of the Hawke ’» Bay Jockey Club’s meeting there was glorious weather and a very large attendance. The track was fast and the racing good. The totalisator handled £10,534 10/-, against £12,548 10/- last year, a decrease of £2314. Tameteran.gi and Lochabbv were the early leaders from Pikcte, King Manu and Rory Mor. Along the back Rory Mor went into third position. Into the straight the order was the same. Rory Mor came through to win by half a length. The third horse was three lengths further back. Pikcte was fourth. Time, 2.13. Grand Lahu took the lead from Lord Aintrcc, Nigger Head and Sir Spear. At the railway bend Joe ran up to third position. Lord Aintrcc was knocked back. Nigger Head led into tho straight and prevailed by half a length. Joe was three-quarters of a length further back, and Lord Aintrce a length behind. Time. 1.9 4-5.

Chrysology, a hot favourite, was first to show out from Brown Sugar, Freehold and Moa Bird. At the railway bend Teller was in the lead, with Brown Sugar close up. In the race home, Moa Bird came from the back to get second place by half a length from Teller. Chrysology was two lengths further back. Time, 1.21.

Past the stand Rapallo was in the lead from Chamnline. Cluny and Pewa. Along the back the order was the same, with Pewa and Cluny closing up. Into the straight the order was the same, but Cluny put in a great run to head Rapallo. The latter again challenged but failed to reach the leader by a head. Pewa was three lengths further back.
