Legion of Frontiersmen
ANNUAL RE-UNION. N (MANAWATU) SQUADRON. On Saturday evening N (Manawatu) Squadron, Legion of Frontiersmen, held their animal reunion, when a spirit of cheer and comradoship was fully in evidence. Captain R. H. Allen, officer commanding, presided, During the evening the following toasts were honoured: ‘ The Hiug, Captain Allen; “The 9000 Frontiersmen who gave their lives in the Great War, Staff Major Findlater; “The Defence Staff,” Q.M.S. Louisson, coupled with R.S.M. Holmes; “The R.5.A.,” Trooper' Paterson, coupled with Mr. Chapman, R.S.A.; “Other Squadrons,’’ Trooper Warren, coupled with Captain Harclie, Captain Nicholls and Captain Powell; “Tho Press,” Lieut. Bangay; “Royal Air Force, Royal Navy and Mercantile Marine,’” Lieutenant Proston, coupled with Lieut. McMastcrs; “Lady Helpers," Captain Hardie, coupled with Trooper Fox. Visiting squadrons wore represented as follow: Col. Vickcridge, Major Findlater, Headquarters Staff, Hawera; Captain Powell, M Squadron, Hawera; Captain A. Ilardie, Lieut. Curkam, M.C., Q.M.S. Parnell, Sergeant Perry, and four other ranks, Wanganui G Squadron; Captain Nicholls, Lieut. Preston, Lieut. McMasters, Q.M.S. Winter, M.M., Sergeant Bartram, Trooper Major Armstrong, I Squadron, Wellington. Other visitors present were R. S. M. Holmes, Defence Staff; Mr. B. Jacobi., president R.S.A.; Mr. Chapman, R.S.A. A large conting-ent of entertainers were present and gave various musical items, including guitar solos by Mr. A. Sundburn; saxophone, Mr. C. Bergorsen; instrumental ducts, Messrs Sundborn and Penman; eccentric dance, Messrs Penman and Wilson; doll dance, Trooper Barleyman; “The Rosary,” guitar, Mr. A. Sundborn. Vocal items were given by Mr. Chapman, Q.M.S. Louisson. Community singing enlivened proceedings and such old war time favourites as “It’s a long way to Tipperary,” “There’s a long long Trail, a winding," and “Keep the Home Fires Burning" were sung with gusto. Messrs Largo and Duckworth proved themselves cap able pianists. Colonel Vickridge, Captain Hardie and Major Findlater gave speeches during the evening on Legionary matters, which were of great interest. Lieut. Fraser, liason officor for the Legion of Frontiersmen, whose efforts are untiring in the interests of the Legion in the North Island, has now turned his attention to the South, where he is trying to recruit new squadrons, and was spoken of in very praiseworthy terms. Great thanks were due to the committee and lady helpers for the success of the evening, the catering and decorations.
The evening, which was one of the most enjoyable yet held by N Squadron, closed with the singing of the National Anthem and the Last Post sounded by Trumpeter Wearne.
