Record Attendance at Lougburn School Ball
The event of the year as far as the children of Longburn school are concerned is the school ball, which took place on Friday evening. There was a record attendance and the function provided a delightful evening for both children and grown-ups. In appropriate setting and costuming, the various items. The girls wore raffia head bands worked in ornamental designs, and raffia busbies. The boys were similarly dressed, but with feather plumes. The grand march was led by Ivan Weddell, who was dressed as Te Rauparaha and carried a taiaha. A special feature was the canoe song, the children giving a demonstration of eurhythmies. Seven small canoes of eight rowers formed a large war canoe on the hall floor, the children performing a number of actions pertaining to the canoes. All the actions were performed to the singing of “Haere Ra.” This item was so well performed and so much appreciated that it had to be repeated. The children's programme of 24 dances was completed in two hours, after which they were marched into the supper room at 9.30 o’clock ,the adults commencing dancing immediately afterwards. Mr. L. T. Hills acted as M.G., and music for the children was supplied by Mrs. C, Hills (piano), Mr. Clair Shirriffs (banjo) and Master Morley Shirriffs (drum). After supper the chairman of the school committee (Mr. W. Weddell) thanked the people for their wholehearted support. He said that a record number of tickets had been sold_ and he presented prizes to those pupils who had sold the most. These were Gordon Mitchell 1, Alice Oliver 2 and Lilia Weddell 3, who were the leaders of teams. Votes of thanks to Mr. and Mrs. C. C. Hills and the school staff were carried with applause.
