Feilding Court

GAOL FOR THEFT

Before Mr. R. M. Watson, S.M., at the Feilding Magistrate’s Court yesterday, Frederick Ford, alias John Ford, alias James Ford, an Australian, aged 43 years, was sentenced to two months’ imprisonment for the theft of an overcoat valued at £5, the property of Wesley Lyne. Sergeant Cahill stated that Mr. Lyne went to an hotel in Feilding to have lunch, hanging his coat in the passageway. On returning, he found his coat gone and communicated with the police, who found it in the possession of the accused in a wharc on Haleombc road. Ford was in the company of two others who had been warned to leave Fcilding. Tho sergeant could not say. anything in accused’s favour, as he had a lengthy list of previous convictions. When the overcoat was reported missing suspicion fell on these men, and Ford admitted the theft. The accused pleaded guilty and, asked if ho had anything to say, blamed drink for his trouble and asked that a prohibition order be issued against him. Tho Magistrate said that accused should have known enough about himself to take out a prohibition order before getting into further trouble. The accused would be sentenced as stated above. An order was made for the restitution of the coat.
