Telephone Lines Taken Aboard Steamer

INTERESTING EXPERIMENT IN WALES British Official Wireless. RUGBY, Aug. 11. An interesting experiment was inaugurated at the Newport docks, South Wales, to-day, when a Clan Line steamer was connected telephonically with London, Glasgow and Liverpool. Cables had been laid to the general cargo side docks, where nine plugging-in switches were installed. Tho Clan Line has used the Newport docks for 40 years, and it is estimated that it has carried 2,000,000 tons of cargo to Egypt arid other parts of Africa, including locomotives and railway carriages. Similar facilities for the connection of chips berthed in the docks to the trunk telephone service will be availiable at Swansea and Cardiff.
