Reprsentative Basketball

WAIRARAPA TOO GOOD FOR MANAWATU On Saturday afternoon, on tho Technical School ground, a representative basketball team from Wairarapa met and defeated a Manawatu team by 18 points to six after a hard and fast game. The visitors showed better combination throughout and their passing was good, though at times too long, giving Manawatu opportunities which more experienced players would have made good use of. Wairarapa’s defence was very sound, an outstanding player in this regard being Miss Welch. The visitors handled the ball with confidence and had two Strong forwards in Misses L. Hutchins and P. Kilmister. The Manawatu players suffered the disadvantage of not having played together, and obvious nervousness on the part of some of the players led to clumsy handling of tho ball. This was ovident in many of the passing rushes and in the attempts at goal. Por the defence Misses M. MacDonald and E. Norris did fine work, while Misses D. Knight and J. Barrio showed up in the centres and Miss J. McKenzie in the forwards. The teams were as follows:

Manawatu (light green): Misses E. Norris (C.0.G.), L. Bennett (A.S.), M. MacDonald (Levin), J. Barrio (Tech.), D. Knight (H.5.0.G., captain), G. Dais (C.0.G.), M. Simmons (G.H.S.), J. McKonzio (Levin), P. Payne (A.S.). Wairarapa (dark green); Misses M. Bright, L. Hutchins, P. Kilmister, Z. Ackerman (captain), R. Brown, J. Ford, N. Welch, G. Angone, C. Musgrove. Tho game opened vigorously with Wairarapa attacking and, following a passing rush, M. Bright scored. Tnero was a spell of rather wild throwing, both sides failing to score after several opportunities. Manawatu captured the ball and, after a scramble, J. McKenzie scored with a nice long shot. I—l. A passing rush took the ball to Wairarapa territory for.L. Hutchins to score, tho same player immediately following this up with another splendid goal. 3—l. P. Kilmister registered a fourth for the visitors. Taking the ball, Manawatu was responsible for a clever passing rush which ended in J. McKenzie scoring a neat goal for the home side, P. Kilmister following with another goal for the visitors. 5 —2. Faulty handling of the ball lost several chances for Manawatu, but J. McKenzie eventually scored and shortly after tried a long shot at goal, which failed. Despite clever interception, L. Hutchins found the goal twice in quick succession. 7—3. M. Bright and P. Kilmister added two more to the visitors’ total, making tho half time seoro 9—3.

Play brightened up considerably in tho second spell and Manawatu played with a little more confidence and better combination. However, Wairarapa continued to dominate the game and. although J. McKenzie oponed tho scoring with a goal for Manawatu, P. Kilmistcr replied with three more to Wairarapa’s total in quick succession. 12— 4. M. Bright then took a turn and, after some bouts of pretty passing, scored a further two goals. Manawatu showed up again but following somo bright passing a shot at goal was well smothered. Wairarapa secured the ball once more and L. Hutchins was responsible for a snappy goal. Lightning passing followed and M. Simmons made no mistake with a splendid shot at goal. 15—5. Passing rushes followed up and down tho field, P. Kilmistcr registering yet ant 'ter goal for the visitors and J. McKenzie replying for Manawatu. 16 —6. Just before time M. Bright and L. Hutchins were responsible for two neat goals, leaving the final score 18—6 in favour of Wairarapa. Mr. L. Berry was the referee. The visitors were entertained at afternoon tea and were billeted for tho night in Palmerston North, returning to Wairarapa yesterday morning. It is hoped to play a return match in the near future.

RESULTS OF SATURDAY’S COMPETITION GAMES

Only three games wero played in the competition series on Saturday, the rest being postponed until a later date. Results:—■

A grade: Woodville D.H.S. 14 v. YfM. Gym. A 12. B grade: Linton 18 v. Technical C 7; Woodvillo D.H.S. B 7 v. Y.M. Gym. B 3. In the second round Woodville D.H.S. A, which is a new team, registered a surprising victory over one of the leading teams, Y.M. Gym. A. Both teams maintained a high standard of play throughout, but Woodvillo won because of their excellent teamwork. Woodvillo’s defence was particularly good, but J. Peebles and M. Mules were outstanding. No doubt some of the Woodville players will merit consideration from the selectors when they are choosing the personnel of representative teams in the future.

There will be practices of Probables v. Possibles on Tuesday and Thursday mornings, and representative matches on Saturday, -when Manawatu will meet Horowhenua and Wellington teams.
