Spectacular Fire at Taupo

FOUR BUILDINGS CONSUMED. TAUPO, Aug. 6. A spectacular lire at 3.30 a.m. today resulted in a block of shops in Tongariro street, the main thoroughfare of Taupo, south of tho Tuwhnrctoa street intersection, being burned to tho ground. In the absence of Arc-lighting facilities nothing adequato could be done to check tho spread of the f ames, the roar of which could be heard all over the township. The premises destroyed were J. Loughlin and Company's store, Loughlin’s billiard saloon, auction rooms adjoining, and G. W. Thorpe and Company’s store. The buildings -wore of one storey only. Fortunately there was an entire absence of wind—the first time for a week—or the Lake hotel and Mr. Thorpe’s house, which is behind his store, must also have been destroyed. As it was, both .very narrowly escaped.
