Tons of Food Has Been Distributed By Relief Committee
The Mayor (Mr. A. E. Mansford), when thanking those who had assisted on the programme of the sacred concert in aid of relief funds held at tho Opera House last evening, mentioned that in regard to the Central Relief Committee’s distribution the food depot, up to August 1, had handed out two tons of bread, ouc-third of a ton of butter, two tons of flour, three tons of meat, one and a-half tons of oatmeal, four tons of potatoes, three-quarter of a ton of rice, sago, etc., one ton of sugar, and a quarter of a ton of tea. ‘ ‘ This reflects tho greatest credit on the citizens of Palmerston Nortli and district," said Mr. Mansford, who added that tho city had the distinction of being the best organised centre in regard to relief in the Dominion. “This position we want to maintain despite the fact that wo are affected by a depression," he added, in pointing out that he .had faith enough in tho people of New Zealand to realise that, even with extra burden s themselves, they would assist those less fortunate than themselves.
