“ Frame-up on the Public ”
ALLEGATIONS AGAINST TAXIDRIVER, Per Press Association, NELSON, Aug. 3. Richard Robert Rawson, taxi-driver, who early last Monday morning was found lying on the road by his car in Bridge Street and removed to the hospital, was this morning charged before J.P-’s with having failed to account for sums of money totalling £2 2s Gd to William Gould. When application was made for bail, the police said there was one charge only at present, but there was a possibility of another as enquiries were still being made. • Detective Sinclair said he considered it his duty to place certain facts be-' fore the Bench to take into consideration if bail was considered. He explained that Rawson was a taxidriver who had been allegedly assaulted and robbed, but when a man stooped to what was a frame-up on the public, then the amount of his bail should be substantial. He asked that, if bail was allowed, Rawson should report to the police daily. Mr J. R. Kerr, for accused, objected to the detective’s remarks about accused. Accused was remanded to Priday, ■Trail being fixed in one surety of £2O, ■accused to report to the police daily.
