FAILURE TO UNDERSTAND UNEMPLOYMENT TAX. At the conclusion of a meeting of representatives of automobile associations and local bodies held yesterday iu Palmerston North to discuss highways finance, a member took tho opportunity to sound some of those present as to their knowledge on the question of furnishing unemployment tax returns. “I have read everything I have come across on tho subject but, for tho Jifo of me, I cannot make head or tail of tho matter,” declared tho questioner, who made an appeal to tho representatives to “elucidate the problem.” Various opinions were then expressed, most of these being far from complimentary, to officialdom’s version. “It appears to me,” said Mr. Grayson (Auckland), “that the Government has apparently relied on the Press to pass on all information to tlio public. On the other hand, the Press of New Zealand has, it appears, received very little on the matter and I feel that the Government should advertise with the newspapers and through them let the public know all about its scheme and its workings.” “If you ask me,” said a more candid member, “I do not think the Government members understand it themselves.”
“I’m only a ‘cow-coelcy,’ but I have studied the reports about tho levy as much as I can —and I am none the wiser,” rotorted a prominent farmer of the Manawatu. “I certainly think a fuller explanation—free from ‘technical language’—should be given. After further discussion, Government reports were brought in and freoly discussed by the meeting.
