Secret Cockfights
EA7IDS BY "FLYING SQUADS.” Police in the Black Country have lately been keeping a sharp look-out for devotees of the illegal sport of cock-fighting. Whitsuntide marked the opening of tho cock-fighting season in many parts of tho country, and several mains were arranged to take place in secret. To defeat tho vigilance of the police, followers of the sport often travel fifty miles or so into adjacent counties in ordcrvfo hold a series of fights. At tho recent Whitsuntide, however, the authorities made a determined effort to break up the cock-fighting gangs. Special police were held in readiness in many districts where illegal mains were known to have been arranged. Past cars were at their disposal, and any suspicious gathering in the countryside was to be the signal for a swift raid. Though cock-fighting had practically been stamped out a few years ago, it is now said to be gaining in popularity. Last year scores of mains were held all over England. Fighting cocks fetch big prices and the betting on tho birds in the ring is frequently very heavy. Sometimes huge sums are at stake on a big main.
