Harriers Stage Novel Event

ROAD RACE FROM TIMARU TO OAMARU. Per Press Association. TIMARU, Last Night. A team of Duned-in Civil Service barriers staged what is believed to bo tho first road relay ever held in New Zealand on Friday and to-day covering 124 miles in 13 hours 40 minutes 35secs. The team comprised ten runners, each of whom covered a little over seven miles each the first day and slightly over five miles each to-day. The -first runner left Dunedin at 9 o’clock on Friday morning in heavy weather. Oamaru was reached at 3.19 in tho afternoon. The party stayed the night in Oamaru and left for Timaru early this morning. The captain of the team, b. R. McKernan arriving at the viaduct at Caroline at 3.19 at 3.19 p.m., the identical time that Oamaru was reached on the previous day. The time from Oamaru to Timaru is given a# 7 hours 51 mins. The average per mile the first day is recorded as 6min. 30secs, and to-day as 6min 40sccs. The weather for to-day’s trek was almost perfect though on each stretch the runners found tar-sealed road troublesome, me captain of the team delivered a message from the Mayor of Dunedin to the Mayor of Timaru, who accorded the party a hearty welcome to the town.
