Impoverished Himself To Help His Friends

ESTATE OP LORD BIRKENHEAD. Received Thursday, 5.45 p.m. „ LONDON, Feb. 18. The News Chroniclo says that Lord Birkenhead left a net estate of £SOOO excluding his country house near Banbury Cross. Tho estate would have been much larger but owes £20,000 income tax which is offset by £30,000 life insurance. Lord Birkenhead latterly received a substantial incomo from directorships but lived generously and acted an immense' uncalculating liberality towards friends and all persons seeking help. This resulted in tho family being left, poorly provided for. In recognition of his public services, and in affection for himself and his family, many well known people, have provided a fund organised by Mi Churchill, who was a close friend of Lord Birkinhcad. Tho contributors include Lord Inchcape, tho Duke of Westminster, Lord ReavcrbTOok &n<>] Mr Purbrick of Melbourne who each gave £5,000. Tho fund exceeds the total similarly subscribed on behalf of Lord Oxford and other impoverished public men. Lord Birkenhead's heir is at present at Oxford arranging to write a hook on his father's life.
