Nations Unite to Participate in Second Polar Year

Tho Foreign Affairs Committee of the Houso of Representatives favourably voted or. a resolution authorising an appropriation for the participation of the United States with twenty-six other nations in the “second Polar year,” in which, from August 1, 1902, to August 31, 1933, tho participating countries, through nearly fifty stations, plan to gather information regarding tho elements surrounding the . earth, especially off the Polar extremities. Byrd’s Litt.lo America is expected to be rcoccupicd for meteorological and electrical magnetic rescarcn. It is understood that the project for such occupation comes from New Zealand. The United States will probably equip and man stations at Fairbank’s, Alaska; the Argentine at New Year’s Island; Franco in the South Indian Ocoan; Brazil in the South Polar regions; Russia in the Arctic, a,nd others at various points throughout the globe. The “first Polar year” so-called, was in 1882, when the leading nations joined in similar work.
