Sluggish River Drainage Board

MONTHLY MEETINGThe first meeting of the Sluggish River Drainage Hoard since tho annual election was held on Thursday, %vhen Mr F. J. Foster was re-elected chairman. There wero also present Messrs. E. C. ( Print, M. J. Ryan, J. B. Wilton, A. N. Moreau, tho overseer (Mr. W. Locke) and tho clerk (Mr. R, H. Spencer). The financial statement submitted to the meeting showed that tho bank overdraft, after paying all accounts, was £556. The outstanding rates amounted to £1360. Tho total amount owing to the board was £1966 6/7. The treasurer reported that approximately £506 had been paid in rates. Tho overseer reported that 35 chains of the Taikerea drain had been completed since last meeting, and hemlock had been cut in various drains. Several applications for the erection of bridges over the various drains wero agreed to, subject to their being passed by the board’s overseer. It was decided to hold a special meeting on January 20 to consider new drainage contract specifications. A London cable states that the Prince of Wales is suffering from a slight chill which necessitated tho cancellation of his engagements yesterday. These included his attendance at tho Simon Bolivar commemoration dinner in London. On tho advice of Sir Stanley Hewitt, his physician, he remained indoors for the time being.
