HIGH SCHOOL GALA DAY
The staff and pupils of the Foxton District High School held a most successful gala day at the school on W ednesday afternoon, in aid of the school funds. In response to a circular appeal from the headmaster, parents of the pupils generously donated a largo quantity of cakes, sweets, produce and other saleable articles which were sold from stalls under the supervision of the teachers. A large attendance of tho public were present during the afternoon and a clearance of the articles was effected. Afternoon tea was dispensed in the secondary school building ami here again good business was reported. During the afternoon a squad of secondary school boys under the care of their teacher, Mr A. Robbie, gave a fine demonstration of life saving drill which reflected great credit upon tho lads' and their instructor. An exhibition of eurythmics by a squad of girls under the supervision of Miss Bindon, was very favourably commented upon by those present, while the parade of girls and boys in fancy costume, decorated bicycles, perambulators, etc., created much interest and amusement. Prizes for tho best fancy dress and best decorations were awarded to the following:—Fancy costumes. —Boys: Ist prize, Douglas Caldwell, “Community Tea”; 2nd, Allan Coley, “Rajah.” Girls: Ist prize, Zena Fraser, “Sir Francis Drake”; 2nd, Nola Martin “Peasant Girl.” A special prize was awarded to Blancho Thompson “Hiawatha.” Decorated bicycle, Billy Ross;
decorated pram, Iris Raupi; decorated horse and trap, Eric Easton. Various competitions were held during the day and a number of sports events were conducted during the afternoon. The results of these were as follow: —
Competitions: Dinner, Miss E. Patterson, No. 81; lamb, Mrs D. R. Barron, No. 41; Christmas stocking, Miss Nancy Ckrystall, No. 33; towel and face cloth, Mrs Follett, No. 1; goose, Miss M. Symons, No. 45; box of chocolates (1) Mrs Rout, No. 38; box of chocolates (2) Miss L. Robinson, No. 57. Sports events: Slow bicycle race, Jack Irons; obstacle race, Alfred Fowler; dual relay, Joan Barron and Newton Barkley.
To the great delight of the younger children, Father Christmas also arrived on the scene and took charge of a large Christmas tree from which he presented each child with a suitable present.
