Old World’s Highest Homes
Lovers o£ mountain scenery will envy the- Marchcsa Vitelasehi the small house which has just been built to her own plans a littlo below the summit of Monto Genoroso, in Switzerland. This house, to which she intends to retire, is 5500 ft. above sea-level. It isn’t the highest house in Europe—the St. Gothard hospice is considerably higher. In England there are no houses so high up as these. But there are two homes—Tan Hill House and Grouse House, in Yorkshire —which both stand a little over 1700 ft. above sea-level. Not only are these probably the two
highest homes in England, but they must also be very nearly the loneliest. There are no other dwellings near, and they are surrounded by bleak wastelands, which are often completely covered with snow.
