Mercedes Gleitze Arrives
IMMEDIATE PREPARATIONS FOR STRAIT SWIM. Per Press Association. WELLINGTON, Last Night. No time is to be wasted by Miss Mercedes Gleitze, the famous long distance swimmer, in making preparations for her proposed swim across Cook Strait. She said on her arrival by the Corinthie to-day that she would begin making inquiries to-morrow about, the tides, currents and different factors involved in the attempt. “No matter what I am told previously about tho conditions at tho place,” she said, “whenever I go for a swim I go on what tho local pilots tell me. No ono knows as much as they do ab-out the tides and currents. I shall talk with fishermen and o,thcr people who know what your coasts arc like. ’ ’ Miss Glcitzo said emphatically that she had como to swim Cook Strait and would not easily be discouraged.
