£3OO Fines for Bookmakers
HEAVY PENALTIES INFLICTED A.T WELLINGTON ‘ Ter Press Association. WELLINGTON, Aug. 4. Before Mr. Wooward, S.M., to-day, Ralph Ellis Thompson, aged 50, and Thomas Phillips, aged SS, pleaded guilty to bookmaking charges. The Magistrate said that Phillips was convicted three months ago, when he was fined £250. Thompson, also, had two convictions, and was fined £2OO previously. Tho Magistrate fined each defendant £3OO, in default six months’ imprisonment.
SUSPICIOUS TELEPHONES DISCONNECTED WELLINGTON, Aug. 4. Consequent on a statement made in Parliament regarding the illegal use of telephones for purposes of betting, the Post and Telegraph authorities made a move in AVellington to-day. It is understood that. a. number of telephone connections about which suspicion has existed will be disconnected forthwith. TWO FINED AT WANGANUI. Per Press AssociationWANGANUI, Last Night. Frank Sanko and Matthew Carrol, described by the police as moderate bookmakers, were fined £lO each, in default one month.
