Some Household Hints
New potatoes should never be peeled. A much better way is to rub them with a coarse cloth over which salt hasbeen sprinkled, then rinse them in eold running water. Gut flowers with woody stems will last much longer in water if the'stems are scraped for about three inches from tho bottom. When hanging new curtains, sow broad tape across the top to resist the strain of. hooks or pins. Washing-blue mixed with eold water will not streak tho articles to be blued. Steam is an excellent thing for removing creases from dresses or coats that have been packed away. Fix a line in the bathroom, hang the creased clothes on it close to the window, then let the hot-water tap run until the room is full of steam; leave for an hour or two, then dry the clothes in the open air and press on the wrong side with a warm iron. Whca making a plain raisin pudding, use a finely grated carrot instead of an egg. It is cheaper and gives good results. Turpentine, added to the water in which cut glass is washed gives the glass a brilliant polish. Use one tablespoon of turpentine to two quarts of water. When poaching an egg, keep it moving about with a spoon for the first two or three minutes after it is put into the boiling water, and-the yolk will set in the centre.
