CARNARVON DEFEAT STANWAY. The final for Ili c Feilding Hockey Association’s championship and Romney cup was decided on Victoria park on Saturday afternoon when Carnarvon defoated Stanway by 4 goals to 2 in a vigorously contested game, followed with interest, by a good gathering of spectators. A feature of the game was the wonderful display of Whiteman, Stariway’s goalie, whose kicking from goal to midfield was exceptional. With hockey experience this player should go far in good hockey. 11. Grice, for Stanway bore the brunt of the attack, with P. Strawbridge ably supporting at centre half. Carnarvon combined better than their opponents, Florence at centre and W. Giles finalising the effective movements. Their backs played with perfect understanding although one of them is inclined to obstruct his opponents to enable his partner to clear. Stanway had a decided advantage in the early part of the first spell, being unlucky in missing several shots. From hard even play Grice and Strawbridge scored for Stanway and Florence for Carnarvon. The second spell was in Carnarvon’s favour. After several unsuccessful attempts Florence netted from a scramble, and a few minutes later repeated from a good centre by Bedley, With a few minutes to go Florence again scored, and the final whistle closed a good game with Carnarvon the winners by four goals to two. Messrs Garlick and McFarland refereed, giving their decisions prompt-ly,-with fairness to both teams.
