Cubans Strike At Call From Moscow

unemployment protest. HAVANA. A 24-hour general strike in protest against unemployment was inaugurated ju Cuba recently. Tho island was peaceful and no arrests were made. Police said the strike was in compliance with orders from the Third Internationale at Moscow

It was estimated that 200,000 workmen walked out. Public utility plants and railroads wove not affected, the view being taken that there were necessary to the public welfare. Heavy police guards were maintained in their vicinity but'no trouble was anticipated. -Havana had but one newspaper, the El Mundo, Spanish language daily. The typographical union members, who in Cuba include reporters as well as Unotvpe operators, walked out of Diario de la Marina at 9 p.m.. Four other papers were affected similarly. The workmen at El Mundo remained at .their machines in the face of warnings that they would ail be subject to penalties from their labour unions. . Labour leaders insisted that the strike would bo orderly and that every effort would be made to conduct it in a peaceful manner. The only action contemplated bv the police was to prevent property damage or personal violence.
