Yorkshire Library Has Big Expansion

OIROULATING SCHEME. LONDON. “When the county circulating library scheme was started in the West Riding of Yorkishiro in 1922 there were 900,000 people in the county who had no facilities for obtaining books from a public library. Under the scheme 800,000 of these people have been provided with library facilities.” In these words Sir Percy Jackson, chairman of the West Riding (Yorkshire) Education Committee described the progress of the scheme for bringing hooks within the roach of the rural inhabitants in tho largest county in England and Wales.

The scheme has nod- obtained such a hold on the people, continued Sir Percy, that if anyone attempted to oppose its operation or tho spending of a reasonable amount of money on it they would have to answer for their actions to the ratepayers at the elections. Tho founders had set before themselves tho establishment through the county of a library which would provide books for all the reading population and establish places where young and old could go and road at their leisure in their villages.
