Jugoslavia Workers Earn 44 Cents a Day

LOW AVERAGE WAGE ZAGREB, April 5. Wages of workers in Jugoslavia arc comparatively low, according to data collected by the Chamber of Labour in Croatia and Slovenia. The average weekly wages of tho labourers in the city of Zagreb WCrC found to be no more than 40 per cent, of those paid in London and worn about about one-fifth as much as those paid in Philadelphia. Lisbon was found to bo tho only largo European city whore wages were lower than in Zagreb, while in Warsaw they wero stated to bo just the same. Tho figures gave real and not nominal wages, which meant that whereas a worker in London could buy more than 11 standard baskets of food with his weekly income, in Zagreb he could buy less than five baskets. The average daily pay received by the Women working in Jugoslavia was 34 cents, while a Qiird of them worked for 29 cents a day each. The men got an average daily wage of 44 cents. After careful computation it had been estimated that a man in Jugoslavia should receive a minimum of 98U dinars and p woman 7SO dinars a month. Yet according to official data the Women workers received on an average only 69 per cent of these minimum wages and the men but,B3 per cent. The 125,000 men engaged in the timber industry received but 73 per cent of this minimum, and 109,000 engaged in the chemical industry but 79 per cent. These data, are only for Croatia and Slbvenia. If the wages of workers in Serbia, Montenegro and Macedonia were included, the real wages received throughout Jugoslavia would not exceed 60 per cent, of the established minimum requirements.
