On the Niagara Peninsula today, Canada’s new Welland Canal was opened for shipping, ats construction has occupied 20 years and cost £23,000,000. It is a giant stairway fer ships, overcoming the Niagara Falls barrier. Grain vessels, carrying half a million bushels, can pass through it and in seven tremendous steps, be lowered from the level of Lake Superior- and Lake Huron, 326 feet to Lake Ontario,
