Coroner kids Minister of Railways for Speeding
FATAL TRUSSING SMASH SPECIAL TRAIN WAS TRAVELLING 40 M.P.H. Per Press Association. INVERCARGILL, Last Night. At the inquest held this evening concerning the deaths of Alexander Kelly and his daughter Ethel, who both suffered fatal injuries as the result of a level crossing accident at Mokotua, when a motor lorry collided with a special train in which tho Minister of Railways was travelling, tho following verdict was returned: "That deceased met their deaths as tho result of a collision when a motor lorry was struck by a special train containing the Minister of Railways and party." The Coroner, Mr. James Ward, J.P.. in referring to the fact that tho special train was permitted to run at 40 miles an hour, irrespective of crossings, said: "I notice that the train was travelling at about 40 miles an hour when conveying tho Minister of Railways over the line. I do not know why it should be necessary for him to travel at such a speed, for the Minister has the whole of the recess for the purposo of visiting various railway centres on departmental business. However, I suppose he had good reason to travel so."
