From Our Own Correspondent,
The annual mooting of the Pahiatua Swimming Club was held on Monday evoning at the Borough Council Chambers, when Mr Walsh presided over a large meeting of energetic supporters. Votes of sympathy were passed to Mr and Mrs. Hodd and Mr and Mrs Mills.
The secretary (Mr Fairwcather) read the report and balance sheet, -which showed that the cluib had just passed through a very successful year’s, operations. The two carnivals held during the year had produced £62 10s. The total receipts during the year were £125 10s, and the expenditure, £lO7 19s 7d., and the balance on hand was £l7 11s 3d. •
The secretary expressed the wish that some life-saving devico be acquired forthwith to obviate cases of drowning, such as the fatality at Woodville. The baths , had great facilities for young children to learn swimming an-d life-saving. The chairman expressed satisfaction in the present financial standing of the club, which two years ago was over £IOO in debt, but which showed a profit of £l7 11s 3d. Thanks were. accorded to the secretary and also to Mr Douglas, the . caretaker, a-very capable man and one whom the ctab was very pleased with all work' he had undertaken.
The club this, year had not been allocated any championships but the first carnival is to be held on race night, January 29, and the second carnival on show- night.
Regret was expressed in the loss of Messrs. O’Connor and Eager, but the olub heartily welcomed back a past member, Mr Dawson. Mr Walsh moved the adoption of the balance sheet and Mr Hodd seconded tho motion and congratulated the club on its happy financial position. Mr Hodd brought to the notico of the club a bequest of the late H. O. Smith, of £IO,OOO, to be used up within 10 years in providing benefits to school children. There are not many clubs that have been' run and who have kept a caretaker out of its own funds in a manner such as the Pahiatua Club has done. You ca,n pick the swimmers of the district by their physical development. The Gonville Swimming Club has extended an invitation to the Pahiatua Club to compete in a swimming contest at Wanganui daring somo week-end early in the season. Dr. Dawson expressed the wish that a vote of condolence be passed extending deepest sympathy to the parents and relatives of the two victims of the drowning tragedy at Woodville. The chairman moved such a motion and the meeting stood in siienco. Arrangements ate in hand to acquire a reel and also two long poles with a ring attached to the end, and also a life-belt. It was thought that this should give the parents of the children
going to the baths a feeling of security for their safety. The profits of the Euchre dub are to be handed ovor to the Swimming Club.
