Mr 0. S. Dahl son of the late Mr C. E. Dahl, of Palmerston North, has recently been appointed to the position of engineer to the Raupo Drainage Board, Northern Wairoa. Colin Power, the 15-year-old son of Sergeant Power, formerly of Palmerston North and now of Stratford, was recently mn over by a motor-cycle on Mountain road, suffering a fracture of the leg. He was removed to hospital and is now reported to be making satisfactory progress. The retirement of Mr. J. Porteous senior inspector of Native Schools, is announced. Mr. Porteous has held the position of Native Schools inspector for many years and is very well-known and respected by Maoris in the outlying parts of New Zealand. Through long contact with the Maori race ho can speak the language fluently and has a wonderful memory for Maori names and places. Another member of the famous Australian cricketing family of Gregory is dead, namely Mr. Arthur Gregory, agod 6? years, states a Sydney cable. He attended the funeral of his nephew, Syd, on August 1 and when returning from the funeral, he fell off the tram and injured his hand. The wound became septic and caused his death in a private hospital yesterday. He had played for New South Wales and also was a member of the Australian Test team in 1880.

On Saturday morning, members of tha Palmerston. North railway staff met in the stationmaster’s office to farewell Mr. W. J. O’Kane, who has been transferred to Westport as foreman. In making the presentation of a solid leather suitcase and cigarette pouch, the stationmaster, Mr. J. J. O’Shea, eulogised the many good points of the departing officer and stated that he was held in very high esteem by the staff in Palmerston North, of which he had been a member for the last nine years.

Mr John Cameron, district traffic manager of railways for the Wellington district, who retired last week on superannuation was stationed in Palmerston North for portion of his 40 years’ service with the Department. Mr Cameron joined the Railways service in 1889, and, after filling, with distinction, many important positions (including those of Assistant Traffic Manager at Auckland and district traffic manager for the Ohakune section) was appointed to the high position which he recently vacated.
