SALARY INCREASES

HEADMASTERS MOVING. M.P.’S SYMPATHETIC. A move is being, made by : thc New Zealand Headmasters’ Association for salary increases which were'tentatively promised some years ago. : Representatives of the association interviewed local members of Parliament on the subject last week, receiving sympathetic assurances of support. The association maintained that the duties and responsibilities of the headmaster of a largo primary school were no less important or onerous than those of the principal of a secondary or technical school, nor was a lower standard of efficiency, required) y.ct the re spective salaries were not of all prD portion to the national service render ed.

The senior headmasters, it was stat ed, had hecn actually and relatively .underpaid over a long period. An immediate increase was asked for in the salaries of grades six and seven headmasters, to be retrospective to Ist. February, in acknowledgement of the disabilities they had laboured under during the whole of the post-war period. It was suggested that a single scale of salaries covering all teachers, whether primary, secondary, or technical, should bo brought into operation in conjunction with the reorganisation, of the educational system. It was argued that a long and laborious climb up the ladder of promotion with an ultimate maximum of £585 was not calculated to attract . and retain the type of men the primary service needs. The headmasters are apprehensive lest the prizes in the service, ere maintained at so meagre a figure as to result in tho most promising young men using the profession as 3 stepping-stone to other more lucrative pursuits or of avoiding the primary service altogether in view of the more attractive pay in other branches. They thereforo advocate a united service and a unified salary scale. s
