HISTORIC CUP
‘MAGNIFICENT GIFT FOR RACING CLUB.
LONDON, May 15. ; Purchased from tho Duke of RichImond and Gordon, tho magnificent Goodwood Cup of 1852 has been presented to the Auckland Racing Club by Mr. Moss Davis. It will arrive by lonic. Of a height of 34 inches and weighing more than 300 ounces, the cup is of fine craftsmanship in silver. It is in the shape of a bowl, with handles formed by jvinged figures, and this is supported by figures of Orpheus and cherubs stauding up on a shell about which arc the figures of four seahorses.
"I love Auckland,” is Mr. Davis’s excuse for this and many other generous gifts to the city. Goodwood race meeting marks the end of the London season, society then going on to Cowes and Scotland. It is held in the Duke of Richmond’s Park, near Chichester, in Sussex. Some little time ago, Mr. Moss Davis purchased a beautiful silver cup once owned by Queen Victoria and presented it to the Auckland Pacing Club.
