COLOUR CONFLICT IN SOUTH AFRICA
Only Solution is Fusion
EXAMPLE OF RACES OF MEDITEERAX EAN
"Tim real conflict of races in South A trie a is between the white man and the negro, not between the British au.l the Dutch; and there is an increasing tendency on the part of the black man to rise and of the white settler to hold his down that will resolve itself ultimately into a question of the supremacy of one or the other," says George A. Dorsey in the San Francisco Chronicle.
"There is nothing tho black man cannot do if he is only given a fair chance, but this has largely been denied him in his contracts with the white races," says Mr. Dorsey. "Our negro problem in the United States is much simplier than that in South Africa, where the blacks vastly outnumber the whites. As an ethnologist I have never been able to do tilings that the inability of a person to do things was because of rhe colour of his skin, tho shape of his nose or other purely physical characteristics. The psychology back of the so-called Nordic movement is that only the ‘best people’ should be allowed to breed. The ethnologist docs not recognise any ‘best people,’ and if lie did he would see no reason why they should bo allowed to breed to the exclusion of all the rest. "The only solution of this racial conflict between white and black, as I see it, is the gradual fusion of the two. It has been going on everywhere for thousands of years, and will continue to do so until the problem is solved by natural means. Sex knows no laws of colour; that is something that has to bo learnt at the mother’s knee; but these social and psychological restrictions are often hard to break. There is no doubt that in a certain number of people do break over wherever the two races exist side by side. "Take the fringe of nations around the Mediterranean. Southern Italy, Spain and Portugal absorbed a lot of negro blood. In certain parts of Sicily as much as "0 per cent, has been absorbed. The mixture is going cn all the time, and all tho laws under Heaven cannot stop it. In spite of this fact, tho world is quite a decent place to live in, and possibly it might bo more so if we wore to lay aside some of our prejudices. "Take the population of India for example. In spite of severe carte restrictions and the sharp line of demarcation drawn by the British, there are over a million half-castes, or Eurasians, as they arc.called there, and this mingling of the race goes steadily on. If it were not for modern rapid transportation that enables the white population to renew itself constantly, the small number of British in India would eventually disappear and become merged in the Indian-people. ’’
